20th Century Theater

Traffic on Madison Road crawls past the bright marquee while you're standing in a sluggish line outside the old brick theater. Oakley doesn't sleep much on a weekend night, and the crowd piling into the lobby isn't here for movies. They're here for the heavy bass shaking the concrete. You hand your ticket to a door guy in a black hoodie who doesn't even bother looking up from his clipboard.

Heavy room. The space used to show old films decades ago, but now it's entirely about massive guitar amps bouncing sound off high plaster ceilings. You'll catch yourself staring up at the vintage art deco molding while someone spills a plastic cup of cheap beer right on your sneakers. The floor slopes down toward the stage, meaning you can actually watch the drummer even if you're trapped behind someone filming the whole set on a glowing screen.

There's a quieter bar upstairs when you can't take the crushing heat on the ground level. Sound bleeds right through the open balcony anyway. Security guards stand near the side exits chewing gum, watching the front rows heave forward every time the band drops into a heavy breakdown.
